The University of Otago's Special Collections are holding the “Heresy, Sedition, Obscenity. The Book Challenged” exhibition until 29th of January 2010.
As an introduction to your visit, the Radio New Zealand interview with Arts on Sunday, Simon Morris and the curator Dr. Donald Kerr is well worth a listen.
The below missive (kindly supplied by Dr. Kerr) concerned Jean Devanny's The Butcher Shop. She has the distinction of being the first NZ born author to face censorship in this country.
'Instruct watch for new novel entitled 'Butchers Shop' by Jean Devanny Wellington lady Publishers Duckworth, London, alleged depiction station life New Zealand disgusting indecent communistic' - Bert (London). A telegram received from London, 1 March 1926, addressed to Frank David Thomson, the Prime Minister's secretary.
