General information:

Artists have travelled to Antarctica from the earliest explorations,with photographers Herbert Ponting and Frank Hurley perhaps the bestknown.

New Zealand has supported artists in Antarctica since the beginningsof it's involvement in 1956. In the early days of the New ZealandAntarctic programme most artists were either commissioned or invitedthrough connections.

In 1996 Antarctica New Zealand recognised that artists and writerscould provide long-term benefits by raising public awareness ofAntarctica to audiences which otherwise might not be reached.

The Artists to Antarctica Programme was established in partnershipwith Creative New Zealand. Antarctica New Zealand provides,administrative and logistical support, and Creative New Zealandfinancial support. The programme encourages New Zealand artists in alldisciplines to explore Antarctica through their work, thus increasingNew Zealander's understanding of Antarctica's value, and globalimportance.

Antarctica New Zealand aims to cater, over time, for a wide varietyof artistic styles and audiences, reflecting the diversity ofAntarctica and New Zealand society. The artists are awarded thetitle of Antarctic Arts Fellows.

Antarctica New Zealand occasionally invites artists and writers totravel to Antarctica for specific projects. The artists become honoraryAntarctic Arts Fellows and travel to Antarctica under the InvitationalArtists Programme.

The programme invites applications from serious scholars of thehumanities, including writers, illustrators, musicians, photographersand sculptors.

Successful applicants will travel to Antarctica for up to two weeks andvisit sites appropriate to their artistic objectives. The artists willbe awarded the title of Antarctic Arts Fellow.
