Will Sweetman: Embodiment of the Divine in Hinduism

Lecture

Divine embodiment, a mysterious or even blasphemous idea for the Abrahamic religions, is an everyday matter for Hindus. It is nevertheless not entirely clear what Hindus mean when they identify a temple image, for example, as divine. This paper will examine some different Hindu understandings of what it means for the divine to be embodied and also propose a model by which non-Hindus might make sense of the practice.
