Olympia and its Monuments

Lecture

To hold political and military power in the ancient world meant making a mark at Olympia, where the renowned Olympic games were held every four years in honor of Zeus. Cities and rulers gravitated to the site and used the placement of their monuments and imagery to vie with, and outdo, one another again and again, intending to foster and propagate ideas about religion and politics, about themselves, their accomplishments, and Olympia itself to the thousands of visitors to the site. Judy will offer highlights of present work, which concentrate on a comprehensive reading of Olympia and its Greek monuments, from c.600 BC to the 2nd century BC.
