Gender and Sexuality Across the Disciplines
Gender and Sexuality Studies is one of the livelier interdisciplinary fields in New Zealand social science research, but researchers in this area seldom meet except in separate disciplinary conferences. The Gender and Sexuality stream of a Multidisciplinary Sociology conference therefore seems the ideal forum to initiate the convergence of gender and sexuality researchers.
As well as providing a forum for the exchange of research, we hope that the stream will introduce researchers to each other, provide a picture of the field as it is developing, and allow conversation about strategies for developing and protecting teaching and research in Gender and Sexuality, in core programmes and in other disciplines. We invite the submission of papers on gender and sexuality from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives. A regional focus (Aotearoa/New Zealand, Australia, Asia/Pacific) is welcome but not essential.
Professor Elspeth Probyn, chair of the Department of Gender and Cultural Studies at the University of Sydney, will give a keynote address. Professor Probyn has been a key figure in developing Gender Studies in Australia. A panel on "Configuring Gender and Sexuality Studies in the University" is scheduled for Wednesday 1.00-3.00 pm. A supper for the Gender and Sexuality stream is scheduled on the Wednesday evening. On the Thursday evening, there will be a panel discussion of Chris Brickell"s Mates and Lovers: A History of Gay New Zealand (Random, July 2008). Panel members include
Professor Robert Aldrich (History, University of Sydney), Dr Andrew Gorman-Murray (Geography, University of Woollongong) and a mystery panel member. Dr Mark Seymour (History, University of Otago) will chair the panel.
