Free Music Workshops (session 1)

Workshop

These workshops are being held to celebrate the opening of Te Papa’s exhibition, The Mixing Room. They are open to any young people, but especially to those from a refugee background living in New Zealand.

They will offer lessons in the traditional music of Africa and Asia, and also in modern styles such as rap, hip hop, and electronic music. The participants will learn to use traditional instruments and percussion, as well as electronic instruments such as DJ equipment and samplers. All equipment and professional instruction will be provided free of charge. Tutors will include experienced musicians in both traditional music, hip hop, and electronic music.

The workshops will finish with a performance by the workshop participants on The Marae. This will be open to the public, and will be on Saturday 24 from 2pm–3pm.
