Factionalism and virtue in ancient and modern republicanism

Seminar

Do self- and group- interested politics destabilise just political arrangements? Republican political theorists answer "yes". Modern republicans respond by insisting on the need for citizens to be patriotic, giving a civic identity priority over any "identity politics". This talk draws on an analysis of Maori political claims to show that the republican response to this question is self-defeating.
