Excavations at Isthmia and Corinith
Lecture
Dr Matthew Trundle will explore the archaeology of the north eastern Corinthia, especially the Panhellenic games site at Isthmia. Ritual activity began in the 11th century BC, the region saw the first stone temples on the Greek mainland, excellent examples of athletic stadia, starting gates and racecourses have been excavated, as well as ritual-dining caves that date from the archaic period. The Romans enhanced the sanctuary with baths, a theatre and additional sacred buildings until the Christians used much of the sanctuary to construct a major fortress and wall to protect the Peloponnese from barbarian invasion. The area’s strategic and religious significance is well illustrated by 1500 years of building activity at the site.
